Jiang Rongqiao's Baguazhang

Jiang Chinese-English front cover

This is an 188 page, 6x9” paperback book on the old eight changes Jiang Rongqiao’s style that includes 222 inset figures and 135 photographs, full text in Chinese characters, and pinyin with tones given for movement names. This is a new edition, with complete text in Chinese, plus a few comments from the translator. The translation has been fixed up a bit, but if you have an earlier version of the translation you do not need to get this new one, unless you want to see the orginal Chinese.

If you buy them from me direct at a seminar, retail is CDN$30.00. I have a few copies, just let me know ahead of time and I can bring one.

The original book was written in 1963, and reprinted in 1979 without changes. This 1963 book continues to be one of the best descriptions of the movement principles of baguazhang, and especially of Zhang Zhaodong’s style. The old eight changes are popular around the world, and the descriptions, images, and photos will help students and teachers understand the style better.

I translated this book in 1989, sold it in cerlox format until 2001, when I had it properly bound. I took the photos in Shanghai in 1990, which add greatly to the original book’s excellence. The photographs were digitized directly from negatives, so are crystal clear. The photographs are of my martial elder brother, Cai Yuhua. We perform the same style as in the book, as taught by Huan Dahai, who learned directly from Jiang Rongqiao. There are minor differences between the images and the photos, which helps to make things more interesting.

This is a new edition, completed May 2019. Some changes were made to the translation, and I made a few comments.

I already have a dog-eared version of your book but I'm glad you've made the changes that you did to the new version. Job well done! Thanks again for really superior, pains-taking quality products, service and attitude." Andrew Watts

"... I had ordered the same [Jiang Rongqiao and Yan Dehua] baguazhang books before. But, I lent them to a friend, and he liked them so much that I finally decided to buy another set. The works you have translated and put together are high quality and worth the cost, unlike some other materials I have seen." Scott Freeman, Japan.

"Just wanted to drop you a line to say that the [Jiang Rongqiao] book arrived today. Thank you very much. Your translation and adaptation of the book is excellent on my first fast pass. Thanks again." Greg Buckles
